Even the cyclonic power of a Shark vacuum cleaner won’t rid your home of dust. The scourge of every home on the planet has a knack of getting into the most awkward of places. And there’s always some more hanging in the air… just waiting to replace the dust you remove.

While eliminating dust completely is an impossibility, you can reduce the amount you need to deal with. By making a few simple changes to your home and your daily routines, it is possible to reduce dust in your home by up to 50%.

1. KEEP CLUTTER TO A MINIMUM

Dust has an annoying habit of finding its way into the smallest nooks and crannies. To keep it at bay, you will need unrestricted access to every area of your home — something that is not always possible when clutter gets in your way. In addition, clutter can actually harbour dust too. Organise your home for optimum storage, and get rid of things that you don’t need. Clearing your home of clutter will make cleaning faster and easier… and leave fewer places for dust to settle.

2. MINIMISE CARPETS

Carpets provide the perfect resting place for dust, as their fibres give dust something to latch onto. Every time someone walks over carpet, dust is disturbed and dispersed into the air — settling somewhere else in the home. Even with regular vacuuming, carpets are often covered in dust mites, which can prove very problematic for people with allergies. Thankfully, the highly efficient HEPA filters on Shark vacuum cleaners catch the vast majority of dust particles, stopping them from being re-dispersed into a room after being picked up.

3. MAINTAIN YOUR WARDROBES AND CLOSETS

Regardless of the condition your clothes are in, they are shedding their fibres constantly — contributing to dust levels in your home. And every time you disturb them or open your closet, you’re unwittingly dispersing those fibres into the air. Store your clothes in plastic boxes, draws and storage compartments wherever possible. It’s also a good idea to use garment carriers for the clothes you hang up.

4. CHANGE BEDDING REGULARLY

Your bedding provides the ideal environment for dust and dust mites. It’s therefore essential that you change your bedding at least once a week. In addition, cover your mattress in an allergen-proof cover.

5. DUST WITH CARE

A feather duster might help you to reach those out-of-the-way areas in your home, but they can sometimes do more harm than good. Flicking at dust to remove it will simply move it somewhere else — and create real problems for people in your home with allergies. Wherever possible, gently ‘scoop’ dust up with a microfibre dusting cloth. The Shark Rocket Stick Vacuum Cleaner with DuoClean Technology is great for removing dust at height, as it traps it instead of simple redistributing it around your home.

6. CLEAN OUTSIDE

The more often you can shake off dust from your rugs, mats, throws, soft furnishings and curtains the better. However, beating down these items inside your home will disperse the dust into the air. That dust will simply settle somewhere else But before it does, it could cause havoc with allergies and existing respiratory problems. Beat and shake these items outside to ensure the dust is removed from your home.

7. TAKE IT FROM THE TOP

Dust follows the laws of gravity, which means it will always head downwards until it comes to rest. It therefore makes sense to start your dusting and vacuuming at the very top of your house. And in each room, dust at height and work your way down — vacuuming the floors last.

8. PURIFY THE AIR

It doesn’t matter how many precautions you take; dust will always be present in the air. If you have people in your home with severe allergies or respiratory problems, consider buying some efficient air purifiers. Their filters will catch dust particles and hold them in place until you remove them.

Dust is something every householder in the World needs to deal with. But whilst it is inevitable, it can be reduced to a minimum with just a few changes to your daily rituals.
